I belong to a couple of Doodle and Zentangle Facebook pages and get inspired by the artists there. I thank Akila Kalaichelvan for the inspiration for this 6x4" postcard.

Trying something new, a dip pen with an EF (extra fine) nib and Higgins Black Magic ink. Such fine lines! Lots of fun. 4x4"

Dip Pens
I have read about doing doodles with dip pens and particularly glass pens. They have a smooth and even line and don't wear down like many markers. I was pretty crazy to start so my friend Lynda let me borrow some of her dip pen supplies.
Handwriting is pretty rare in this day and age so lately I've acquired a couple of pen pals. I found you can actually forget how to write! Daily practice is helping quite a bit, but the metal-nib dip pen is tough to learn. Doodling with the pen is fun, though, and it's cool that I'll eventually not be buying any more disposable plastic pens.
You would think that regular printer paper would be just fine for dip pen or fountain pen ink, wouldn't you? Well, then you would be wrong, my friend. Soooooo...I ordered some paper, too. Every hobby you take up needs stuff. I guess I'll be getting some ink, too...
I had a great time watching this video, it's exactly what I'd like to do.

Portable Studio
Keeping my art supplies to a bare minimum is challenging, but I love this solution. I have everything I need for doodle art but the paper in this pencil case I got on ebay. The real problem is trying not to want ALL the colored pencils.

Sitting down to draw is pretty intimidating. What to do next? Thank goodness there are LOTS of talented artists on the web, so I tried this idea from Tanglepatterns.com. The end result is impressive even though the steps are fairly simple. 4x4".
File Folder
I bought a thing. I don't buy many things because I'm a minimalist at heart and live in a tiny efficiency apartment. This is a little promise to 'art' every day, scan and post her and then put the original in an expanding file folder. Kind of a New Year's Resolution, but not really-just a reminder that my life's not complete without art.

I've been practicing blending colored pencils and have been fairly pleased, but I love the smooth blending that can be achieved with solvents. I picked up some Gamsol this afternoon and had a very rewarding evening. For these objects I drew an outline, created a gradient and blended with solvent, then drew the design on top with Pigma Micron pens.
